Cookies, Cookies, Cookies

Yes to the dress...just maybe not this one...

Yes to the dress…just maybe not this one…

Around the holidays, I kind of feel like Cookie Monster – I see cookies and I want to stuff them all in my face as fast as possible.

And may times, I give in.

However, the last two holidays, I’ve actually had to keep my diet fairly clean in the weeks before the holidays (when it seems that almost everyone is bringing in junk food!).

Last year, I had to make weight for the powerlifting competition and this year, I had to look good for wedding dress shopping.

Two very different motivations…both equally compelling.

This year, I knew we would be looking at dresses when my Mom and sister came out to visit, which meant that I needed to feel confident and good about how I looked. I didn’t want to be bloated and full of cookies and burritos and other indulgences.

But it wasn’t easy to turn down all of the cookies.

I think that is what motivated me to try the potato diet experiment. I was motivated to stick to it because I wanted to see how it worked. (Interestingly enough that diet actually hindered my weight loss. I finally dropped all of the weight from my vacation binge once I went back to my low-carb, high protein and fat diet.)

However, the clean diet before the holidays was worth it.

I looked great AND I found the perfect dress! YAY!

Actually getting the weight off made dress shopping easy AND fun because I felt like I looked good in almost everything I tried on.

If I’d been up and bloated from a ton of bad food, I wouldn’t have felt as confident which would have probably made me feel more down about how everything looked.

Let’s face it – how you feel you look DOES influence how you feel things look on you!

So I avoided the sweets and felt good.

However, that doesn’t mean I’m going to totally deprive myself!

The holidays are a time to indulge and enjoy. BUT that doesn’t mean you have to binge eat for weeks!

My point is that you can plan ahead, look great for any events by eating super clean BEFORE the holidays and still get to indulge in plenty of cookies during the holidays before returning to your clean eating program!

So if you have a wedding coming up or are doing some major dress shopping this January, don’t let the holidays derail your progress! Plan ahead!

Friends, Family and Food

So this weekend was my final big cheat until Thanksgiving and boy did I do it up right.

I celebrated with a Halloween party last night and a big brunch with Ryan’s sisters this morning.

We are a society where food, family and friends seem to almost be inseparable.

We sit down to dinner as a family for some “family time.” We meet up with friends for a meal to “catch up.” We celebrate with parties centered around food.

At the heart of most of our socializing is FOOD.

Does that make sticking to your diet, especially around the holidays, easy?

HECK NO!

But that doesn’t mean that you can just give up!

Sure use a few get-togethers and specific holiday gatherings as cheat days, but choose them wisely. Choose ones that are meaningful and satisfying.

Don’t just eat bad food to eat bad food.  Don’t just be lazy and take the easy way out.

DON’T JUST GIVE IN TO EVERY TEMPTATION!

I know it is difficult to turn down bad food. I know there are tons of articles with special tips about plate size and drinking water to supposedly help you avoid overeating.

But let’s face it…Once you eat a few bad things at a party and have a drink or two, your inhibitions will be lowered and you probably won’t end up eating only a “bit or two” of the bad food.

So instead pick and choose events to eat badly at.

PLAN AHEAD.

Even if that planning is just knowing that you are going to have a few big cheats over the next few months, but are going to eat super clean in between them.

Think about which events you will really feel deprived if you don’t indulge at and plan to cheat at those. Come up with a plan of action at the others to help you stick to your diet if you don’t want to cheat at them. (This will prevent you from losing all willpower after a drink or two at the party.)

If it is at a restaurant, check out the menu ahead of time. If it is at a friend’s house, there is no harm in asking what the menu will be like.

I always find that when I’m aware of the food choices beforehand, I can create an action plan to keep me on track while enjoying the party and not feeling like the odd man out.

Family, friends and food – You don’t have to miss out OR give up on your diet!

Do I cheat?

Holidays are usually full of partying and bad food. The question is, “Do you cheat or do you stick to your diet?”

Both can work. And frankly what I do depends on the holiday.

On holidays where BBQ is common, like Memorial Day, the fourth of July and Labor Day, I find it very easy to stick to my diet.

So I do.

BUT on holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Ryan or my birthday, I find it much harder to eat well.

I don’t believe in all of those tips to keep the fat off during the winter holiday seasons. I mean seriously…get a smaller plate so you don’t eat as much?!?!

I would much rather just eat badly with family on those days and then go right back to my diet afterwards. I would much rather eat super clean before the holidays and super clean afterwards than deprive myself of food in a social environment that has so much meaning for me.

I don’t like having feelings of deprivation. That is why I eat the diet that I do!

So if I think I’ll feel like I missed out, I indulge. A little indulgence one day could keep me from binge eating for the next week or so.

But it is really up to you. The question I always ask myself way in advance is, “Will I feel like I missed out enough to make me want to cheat for the entire week after or will I be satisfied eating well?”
