Have we talked about CONSISTENCY before?!?

Just like one bad day of eating or one missed workout isn’t going to hurt you, one good day of eating or one great workout isn’t going to make the difference either.

If you are inconsistent, you aren’t going to achieve great results.

It’s as simple as that.

Success comes with consistency!

It doesn’t matter how “good” your diet was this past week, if you don’t keep it up.

Honestly, I would rather someone made small changes they could stick with long-term, than huge changes that only lasted a couple of weeks.

Because, even though the drastic changes will yield quicker changes and more instant gratification, they won’t yield long-term results.

Results comes from consistency.

Especially TRUE RESULTS.

Yea if you want to lose weight on the scale, you can really deprive yourself for a week and get “results.”

Yea your weight will go down, but you won’t really have changed your body composition or have improved your health.

Just like a couple of weeks of working out won’t really improve your strength or mobility. They may make you sore, but they won’t create LASTING CHANGE.

And while programing is an important piece of this, even the best laid plans and the best prepared programs won’t do you any good if you aren’t CONSISTENT.

But consistency is the hard part because life always wants to get in the way.

There will be hundreds of thousands of excuses you can come up with to slack on your program.

That’s life.

So you’ve got to find something that keeps you on track. That keeps you honest with yourself about whether or not you are actually truly following the program you set out to do.

I’ve found that ACCOUNTABILITY is key to CONSISTENCY.

Whether you hold yourself accountable by setting up a food log and writing down your workouts or by hiring a trainer and getting friends involved (or maybe even all of the above), you’ve got to find a way to hold yourself accountable.

So stop letting yourself off the hook because you did a few good days OR beating yourself up because you “slipped up” one day.

CONSISTENCY is key! And it is most easily achieved when we hold ourselves ACCOUNTABLE.

Happy Friday! Go out and work toward what you want today! Don’t wait till Monday!

It’s Better Together

You can work toward your goals alone. You can rely only on yourself for motivation.

You CAN go it alone.

BUT the question is why would you want to do that when there are so many amazing people out there to encourage and support you?

A bit ago I wrote about cutting out the crabs from your life – about cutting out the people who don’t support you and try to hold you back.

That post wasn’t about cutting out everyone and going it alone. It was actually about finding a new SUPPORTIVE community.

You should be selective about who you have around you and value the people who lift you up and make you better.

But you SHOULD find people to surround yourself with that will support you.

Because the journey is better together.

When you need advice or feel like you don’t know your next step, it’s nice to have someone to turn to.

When you don’t feel like sticking to your plan or have a rough day and need motivation, it’s nice to have someone to turn to.

When you’ve had setback and hit obstacles, it is nice to have someone to turn to.

Someone to turn to who’s gone through what you’ve gone through.  Someone who understands the difficulties and can help you stay motivated and moving forward. Someone who supports your goals and will try to push you forward.

Someone who wants to share in your highs and your lows and BELIEVES IN YOU AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

Find people who support you unconditionally.

And by “unconditionally,” I don’t mean they won’t ever question or push or force you to think. Because unconditional support doesn’t mean they believe everything you do is perfect. It doesn’t mean they don’t tell you when you are being stupid.

Actually unconditional support means they care about you enough to help set you right!

It means they are going to question and challenge. They are going to make you think. But they are doing it to make you better, not to drag you down.

And this unconditional support network can come from anywhere. It can be a group we join, a community on an app we use. It can be a blog, our family, our friends.

It can be online or offline…Heck you can have numerous support groups for different things!

The thing is…It’s better together!

Get the support you deserve to help you move forward with your journey!

Now the question is, who is in your support network? What online/offline communities are you a part of? How has this community helped push you forward?

Throw Back Thursday – What dreams have you forgotten?

Every so often, I like to look back over what I’ve accomplished.

It reminds me of how far I’ve come and inspires me to keep going.

And every so often when I look back, I remember goals and dreams that I may have had to let go by the wayside.

Goals and dreams that I actually still want to accomplish, but have for some reason had to put on hold.

Goals and dreams that if I ever want to accomplish I, at some point, need to buckle down and just do them because they aren’t going to accomplish themselves!

Get The Support You Deserve – Get Rid Of The Crabs

This past weekend I attend this Fit Business Conference thanks to Dennis.

Bedros, the organizer of the event, started the event off with probably the best stories of the weekend…

A story about CRABS.

In his story he spoke of talking to a crab fisherman who had a bucket of crabs.

In the bucket were crabs piled on top of one another…And one single crab crawling to get out of the bucket.

As the crab grasped the rim in an attempt to make a getaway, Bedros said to the fisherman that it looked like one was going to make an escape.

The fisherman told him to just wait and see what happened.

Because, just as the crab looked like it was going to escape, the other crabs grabbed it and pulled it back down into the bucket.

The good, the bad and the simply stupid

The Good

  • I love the Olympics. I love the Olympic trials. They make me want to go and workout and be really really good at something!
  • Ross the boss has been providing me with all sort of great inspirational photos recently. (Ross the boss is also known as Monkey Knuckles haha). She more than anyone should be proud of where she is today! Right before we went paddleboarding her father told her, “Remember you aren’t a jock like those other people.” Uhm sorry Ross the boss’ pops…BUT SHE IS! She’s a heavy lifting, paddleboarding, sprinting, rowing, rock climbing!?! JOCK! AND best of all…She’s lovin’ it!

  • I LIKE IT! Active at 85!
  • Great deadlift workout with some of my favorite lifting ladies! Both ladies set new lifting PRs! AMAZING!

Oh yea sweat and biceps! Beautiful! 🙂

  • Also, I think I’ve mentioned this at least once before…I LOVE SUMMER! Fresh, local, delicious fruit!

The Bad

  • I think is potentially my diet nightmare – “The Starch Solution.” I love how low-carb diets are called “fad diets” while this diet by Dr. McDougall’s isn’t considered a fad diet because it has helped thousands of people. Well, low carb diets have helped thousands of people too. And if you do the research, low-carb diets have been around for a lot longer AND helping people for a lot longer. So how are we defining fad diet here? Also this kind of sounds like a “fad diet” claim : “The Starch Solution is a groundbreaking program that will help you shed pounds, improve your health, save money, and change your life.” I am curious though what research studies this book is based on….I looked at the site but I didn’t find many studies. I found news articles, which seemed more promotional than informative. I also did find an article called “Posthumous Interview with Tim Russert.” Uhmmm….this is not PROOF that your diet is right!!!

The Simply Stupid

This isn’t really a good, bad or simply stupid thing. It is just an interesting article and the doctor cited in it was a member of the gym I work(ed) at. I especially like it because it isn’t against fat and it bashes the low-fat diet. Of course it isn’t flattering about low-carb diets either but I don’t think a Primal diet full of fruits, veggies and some non-gluten carbs would fall under what they define as a low-carb diet. Actually I wonder what their definition of “low-fat” and “low-carb” truly is…

Another random thought, do you ever see an infomercial for something and think, “That is super cool” and then right after think, “That can’t be healthy?” I saw a commercial for Slushy Magic and thought about just how amazing a slushy drink would taste during the warm summer months (or year around in sunny California!). I then thought, “But how can something that turns any liquid into slush in one minute be good for you?” I seriously wonder what is in those cubes that can turn any drink (or even yogurt) into slush in under a minute.
