Playing in the Park

So yesterday was beautiful outside so Ryan and I went to the park for a little outdoor workout session.

Some “rock climbing.” And some nice graffiti too…”FREE.”

Some handstand holds and push ups maybe? 🙂

We compiled a few things into a video for one of the Under Armour What’s Beautiful challenges. The challenge was to come up with an excuse to not accomplish your goal and then show yourself defying it.

My excuse was “noise” – doubts and negativity from other people and my own self doubts.

But I overcome all the noise by putting on my headphones and focusing on my workout!

P.S. Can I just say I love to swing on the monkey bars!?!

The good, the bad and the just plain stupid

Below are random things from this week that I just felt the need to share.

The Good:

1. Rock climbing is simply awesome. If you haven’t gone, I recommend you try it!

2. Kombucha. Why oh why are you so hard to find in stores? You are super healthy yet Whole Foods is just about the only store to sell you. Can someone please tell me why you can find WhoNu bars everywhere and Kombucha nowhere?

Also, soon to come a Kombucha recipe (and this won’t be like the foam rolling video…it will happen in a more timely manner. Although the foam rolling video will still be up soon! I promise!)

The Bad:

3. Kashi uses genetically modified products. I think food products that use these products should have to be labeled. Do you?

4.” Eating meat started from boredom and experimentation that became habit. If we eat dead flesh then we become dead flesh. It is said that humankind was immortal until it began eating the dead. Keeping the brain busy is how you feed the body. Keep it busy and only take from this earth what you need.

Sit on that for a few seconds, maybe even minutes. Keep your brain busy by learning, thinking, and creating. We have so much to unlearn.

We will chat again…”

This was the first comment on the NY Times “The Ethicist Contest Winner.” Oh boy….

And the Simply Stupid:

5.

I wanted to share this photo for two reasons. One, I made it and thought it was funny. Two, it boasts that it is “A fat-free food.” As if that makes it healthy!!!

6. Ok so this isn’t really “stupid” per say. But it is really funny. In an old episode of The Office, Michael gets a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit for breakfast. He takes off the biscuit and says, “Healthier.” Haha I like it even though it isn’t totally true.

The Difference between Diet and Lifestyle – Part I

You’ll run into people who have adopted a new eating/exercise plan who will claim they’ve made a “lifestyle change.”

But have they really?

Because I change my diet and exercise program doesn’t mean I’ve changed my lifestyle. I’ve changed my diet numerous times throughout my life and I’ve even changed my opinions about what is HEALTHY, but I’ve NEVER changed my lifestyle.

My lifestyle has always been one focused on health and activity.

Even on vacations the things I want to do the most revolve around this.

Farmers market – FRESH, LOCAL, ORGANIC

Hiking along the beach looking at the tide pools.

Barefoot is better.

So next time you think about saying you’ve changed your “lifestyle” because you’ve adopted a new diet, take a really good look at whether or not things have truly changed. Have you truly changed your “lifestyle?”

And if you haven’t changed your lifestyle, do you really think you’ll be able to stick to this new healthy diet if the rest of your life doesn’t reflect the same beliefs?

Off to Cali!

So tomorrow Ryan and I are heading off to Cali for vacation. YAY!

I’m so excited because we will be able to workout outside and may even get to go paddle boarding!

It’s sort of a tradition for us to do The Murph each time we visit.

Try it!

Paddle boarding last summer.

The Murph

For time:

Run 1 mile

You can do the exercises in any order, but all reps must be completed before running the final mile.
100 pull ups
200 push ups
300 bodyweight squats

Run 1 mile

The Man Bicep Mom Visits Boston

My mom came to visit this weekend!

One of the few people I look tall next to!!! 😉

We ate lots of deliciously non Primal food. Walked around a ton (and went shopping!). Did an hour of cycling and lifted heavy weights.

The Man Bicep Mom took her first spin class and did 3 pull ups even though she never does them! AWESOME!

It was all in all – WONDERFUL.

A couple of “observations” from this weekend:

  1. We are killing our kids by letting them eat crap and be lazy bums on the couch.
  2. It is SUPER easy to eat Primally at almost any “nicer” restaurant. I mean honestly, you really have no excuse not to stick to your diet.
  3. Circuit training really does prepare you for any physical activity.
  4. Getting older shouldn’t mean just accepting physical decline.

Ok…so let’s start off with the first observation.

My mom and I went to Mike’s Pastry in the North End. It is sort of a tradition for us when she comes to visit. We get chocolate covered cannoli and cappuccinos and we sit and gossip at a table in the bakery for hours.

This last time when we were there, a hoard of 13-14 year olds came swarming in. They were probably on a field trip in the North End – seeing the Old North Church and some of the other landmarks in the area.

What surprised me was the fact that all of the kids were allowed to get HUGE pastries.

And the other thing that surprised me was that about 80% of the children were overweight.

I’m sorry if this sounds mean, but what popped into my head was “Why are these kids being allowed to eat this when they should be outside on this wonderful day running around?”

Why was eating crap at Mike’s Pastry part of this classes field trip? Was this really necessary? Why at least didn’t they take the snacks outside somewhere where they could also run around?

Am I the only one sort of sickened by the fact that the adults and parents didn’t seem to care that their kids were out of shape and really shouldn’t be eating all of the crap? Am I over-thinking this whole incident?

Ok observation number two…It is super easy to eat well at any nice restaurant.

I’ve found it to be very interesting that at nice restaurants they cook mostly Primal foods. Usually they don’t even cook things in vegetable oils, but instead use lard and butter and olive oil.

Also, unless you go to an Italian restaurant, there really aren’t even that many carbs on the menu. At steak houses, they generally serve potatoes. At seafood places, it is usually potatoes or maybe even rice.

And at this restaurant Clio that we went to, there were only even a handful of non-vegetable/fruit carbs served throughout the entire 7 course meal! There were only a few potatoes and parsnips served in a couple of dishes. No rice. No bread. No pasta.

No excuse to really cheat on your diet.

So if culinary tradition says we should cook with animal fats and barely serve any carbs besides fruits and vegetables, why do we load down every meal with carbs and vegetable oils? When did cooking with processed crap and carbs become the norm while only restaurants run by Iron Chefs cook with whole foods?

Don’t you think there is a reason that our culinary tradition avoids using a ton of wheat and vegetable oils? To me this is just more proof of how right the whole idea of eating more “Primally” is.

So my third observation has to do with the Man Bicep Mom. My mom does weight training and plyometric circuits. She never does pull ups and she has never taken a spin class. She also has never done any powerlifting. Yet today she did all three…pretty easily actually.

She survived an hour of spin that would be difficult for even an advanced cyclist (trust me I know…I had people who spin all of the time in my class today who looked like they were dying).

She then also did some powerlifting and busted out three pull ups even though she literally never does them.

Why could she do all of this so easily?

Her weight training and cardio circuits!

She does fast paced circuits that pretty much incorporate everything. She uses dvds from The Firm, which I might add are great for a home exerciser who doesn’t necessarily want to only do powerlifting moves.

The circuits include weights and plyometrics, kettlebells, yoga and even Pilates. They really strengthen the entire body.

And because she is doing all of these different things to build her strength and cardiovascular endurance, she had no problem doing the spinning or the weight training.

I have people who attempt their first spin class after only doing hours of cardio who struggle. And you wouldn’t think they would, would you?

But they do. They aren’t prepared for the short bursts of high intensity sprints. They aren’t prepared for adding a ton of resistance as they climb a hill. They legs aren’t prepared for jumps or even isolation.

They aren’t prepared because they are only used to one thing – long, chronic cardio.

But the Man Bicep Mom? She was prepared. The plyometric drills included in her circuits prepared her for sprint intervals. Her weight training strengthened her legs and core so she could climb hills and easily stabilize her body in and out of the saddle.

Her body was used to variety and used to being pushed.

So if you want to be a renaissance fitness woman,  you’ve got to do circuits and mix it up! Even if you love running, throw in some weight training circuits every once in a while! They will even help your running!!!!

This all leads to my fourth and finally observation for this weekend – Age isn’t an excuse for being out of shape PERIOD. End of story. That’s it.

I have clients that say to me, “Well I’m ____age. I’m not going to be able to do the same things I did when I was young.

Can I just say that the statement above is absolute HORSE SHIT!?! (Sorry but it honestly is.)

Yes your body is going to age. Yes some things may become more difficult and you may decide you don’t like doing certain exercises any more because they do bother your body more.

But you can still be fit and as physically able as when you were young.

Don’t believe me? Just go look at the Man Bicep Mom posts! Just read what I wrote above!

I mean even just today my mom said that she honestly didn’t feel any different from when she was younger except that sometimes she feels like she gets out of shape a bit faster when she takes time off.

So next time you think you can’t do a physical activity because of your age, think about hitting the gym a couple of times a week. A little hard work in the gym can go a long way toward better quality of life and renewed physical strength. You may even find that some great circuit training will make you stronger and help you move better than you even did when you were younger!

So age is no excuse! Workout and stay young!

Anyway, I hope all of you Man Bicepers out there had just as wonderful a weekend with someone close to you as I did. 🙂

Workout Toys For Kids…Are they a good thing?

Let’s first acknowledge two facts:

  1. Childhood obesity is an issue.
  2. Kids love to act like their parents and do what their parents do.

My question then is, can you use the second fact to solve the first one?

WOD Toys thinks you can! They’ve created a new line of fitness toys so that children can “work out” like their parents!

I wish my face looked that cute when I snarl!

Is this workout equipment for kids a good thing?

I think so, but at the same time I’m not sure it is really a solution to our childhood obesity epidemic.

The equipment (and the little girl using it) are pretty darn cute! Plus, I can imagine lots of kids loving to lift like their parents do.

For years, companies have made toys that allow kids to mimic their parents.

Mowing the lawn was fun before you realized it was a chore...Although getting an allowance made doing the chore a little more tolerable! 🙂

Now children have a toy that will help make them more active! And the thing is, they won’t think of “working out with their parent” as a chore…to them it will be playing!

And if kids start associating “lifting” with “playing” at a young age, maybe they won’t dread working out as much as they get older?

Some question I have are…How often do most parents workout in front of their kids? Most people here don’t have their kids watching them workout…Are Crossfitters bringing their kids to their workouts?

I mean I used to watch my mom do her workout tapes at home, but how often are parents using a barbell for Olympic lifts at home? How often are most parents even working out at home?

AND are the kids with parents that DO WORKOUT, the ones that are really a part of the obesity epidemic?

My guess is probably not.

So while this equipment may be encouraging kids to be active…Is it encouraging the kids who need it the most? Is it really a solution to the obesity epidemic?

What do you think? Would you buy this for your kids?

Spring is in the air!

What is it about sunshine and warm weather that just makes you feel so much better?

Studies will tell you it is probably the sunlight that enhances your mood. But whatever it is honestly warm weather and sun make me feel like a bear coming out of hibernation.

All winter, I just want to sit on my couch and be a lump, but suddenly the chill leaves the air and the sun is shining and I just want to be outside playing!

I enjoy being outside. I love walking, bike riding and paddle boarding! There are just so many great ways to exercise play outside!

If you need some inspiration, check out a video that Ryan and I made called “Primal on the Playground!” It will give you some great outdoor workout ideas!

There is also one “inactive” thing that I love about warm weather – the fact that you can BBQ!!! And last night, Ryan and I had our first BBQ of the summer. Below is the recipe for some delicious Baby Back Ribs and yes I do consider ribs to be a HEALTHY meal.

HEALTHY Baby Back Ribs

Ribs from The Meat House! YUM!

Ingredients:

1 Slab baby back ribs from The Meat House
Seasonings (onion salt, Adobo, pepper, smoked paprika, chipotle chili powder, cumin)
1 can of beer
1/2 cup tomato sauce
2 tbsp spicy mustard
1 tbsp cream
2 tsp molasses

Ribs:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place rack of ribs in a baking dish. Rub with seasonings to taste. Place ribs meaty side up and pour in 1 can of beer around ribs. Cover the ribs with foil. Cook for around 2 hours checking tenderness after the first hour.

After baking the ribs, we threw them on the grill for a few minutes to get a nice char on each side.

Sauce:

In a saucepan, heat tomato sauce with mustard, cream and molasses. Bring to a boil then let simmer until it thickens a bit. If you like savory sauce, leave out the molasses. Depending on what I’m craving, sometimes I even make the sauce more mustard-y.

We served the ribs with a salad with a creamy mustard dressing (homemade!) and a Parmesan crisp! YUM!

P.S. I’m starting a lifting team training class at my gym in Boston. If you are interested in learning to lift heavy (or up your max) without spending a ton of dough, email me at manbiceps@gmail.com!

P.P.S. If anyone ever says they can’t get in a killer workout in 20 minutes, give them my email. This will probably be a rant tomorrow.

Children PLAY, Adults WORKOUT

So one of my clients today mentioned that at her daughter’s preschool they were teaching the kids yoga (which I think is actually a really great idea!).

Downward dog is apparently her daughter’s favorite. She practices the moves all around the house and loves teaching her mom, my client, the moves they learn at school.

Her daughter seems to love the yoga and definitely doesn’t consider it to be working out.

For her, yoga is another form of play.

When does the majority of society stop considering working out to be playing?

Is that age getting earlier and earlier as TV, video games and more sedentary extra curricular activities are becoming more popular for our children to do? Or maybe is it all of the organized sports for kids of all ages?

Or maybe it’s us adults that are the problem. We enable or inadvertently discourage play. I’m not being mean or even really judging. I’m just being honest.

I mean who isn’t going to get their kid video games if ever other kid on the block has them? Who isn’t going to want to sit down and watch TV or a movie with their kid after a long day at work?

I’m guilty of not encouraging play sometimes when I babysit. If I’ve had a long day, I love putting on a cute Disney movie and vegging out next to the kids. I don’t have to move or do any work! YES!

And the organized sports? Why are we starting kids with ORGANIZED sports so young? Why not let them experiment with different activities and have fun?

I guess I’m just wondering how much the pressure of organize sports changes what should be “play” into something they “have to do” like working out…

So is it all our fault? Are we adults to blame?

Maybe if we start playing more, our children will!

Go play on the playground with your kids. Go paddle boarding. Go run and climb and swing in the trees with your children.

Make working out play again!

Just like Ivy Morphine of the Boston Derby Dames does!

The Cave Kids – Children’s Music UPDATE

So Ryan has officially released a Primal children’s music CD! I, of course, am a huge fan!

The CD teaches children about healthy eating habits while helping them learn other things such as their ABCs and days of the week. The songs also encourage kids to get up and exercise!

(And as an adult the songs are very easy to listen to unlike some of the children’s music out there!)

Go check it out at The Cave Kids and let me know what you think!!

Interesting stuff from this week

  • My post on Thursday had to do with the lingering belief that women aren’t men’s equals in the sports and exercise arena. Fit and Feminist also had a post concerning a similar issue, which I thought was interesting. It seems that strong, competitive, athletic women still aren’t full accepted by society. Instead society keeps trying to make these women more acceptable by imposing rules to make them more feminine. What do you think?
  • So I made a couple interesting food discoveries this week. I found wild boar salami!!!! Nitrite free wild boar salami!!! IT IS AMAZING! Thank you Meat House! Also, Trader Joe’s had an aged raw goat’s milk pecorino romano. YUM!!! Nice and salty and delicious. And the best part is…it’s raw milk!
  • I also have two delicious recipes I want to share. One is for a Primal cheat day – chocolate macadamia nut bark with sea salt. I didn’t follow Mark’s recipe, but he did give me the idea!

  • The second is a protein shake, which is absolutely delicious! It is Trader Joe’s light coconut milk, coconut oil (for some good healthy fats), chocolate protein and water! If you like the taste of chocolate and coconut together, you will LOVE this protein shake! AND the coconut milk makes it nice and creamy and thick! Plus not only are you getting some protein out of this shake, but also all of the health benefits of coconut.
  • Ok…”all natural” as a label on food means absolutely nothing. There is this new diet aid, called Proasis, which is essentially a protein and vitamin shot that they state is “all natural.” They claim it helps a dieter get all the vitamins, minerals and protein that they won’t get on a diet for weight loss. For one, how can a protein shake, fortified by vitamins be “all natural?” Two, if you do the RIGHT diet to lose weight, you will get plenty of vitamins and minerals and protein! Uhm, Paleo/Primal anyone!?!
  • There is a children’s book now for “Paleo” children!! The book is called “Paleo Pals” and helps parents get their children excited about Paleo eating! Really neat! I love how much of a “culture” Primal and Paleo have become!
  • One last thing…have you ever noticed that when one thing in your life is going right, you feel so much better about everything else? I have!! So I’ve made it through three weeks of this new diet, which is a strict version of Primal and I’ve started to look and feel great! It’s amazing how looking and feeling great gives you so much more confidence in every aspect of your life. You know the saying, “When it rains, it pours?” Well I guess the opposite can be true! When you have confidence in one part of your life and are happy, the happiness and confidence can really spread to other portions of your life!

Also, I’ve created a “Question Submission” page. I’ve already gotten a few questions, which I will address tomorrow in a post. Thank you for the submissions and keep them coming!
